Meet Paul
Friday, January 16th, 2009
2002 to 2008 Paul was on the road, recording and touring worldwide with Austin, Texas based duo Spoken Groove. His touring continues solo with the release of his third solo instrumental CD, “The Butterfly” on New Bell Recordings. A guitarist of first rank, it is always a treat to hear him sing through his instrument. “I always have the guitar with me. It’s my paintbrush. I choose to live through it, or should I say it lives through me.” His songwriting is usually image based, telling the story of the subject - war, nature, romance, but in the language of sound. And he can shred with the best of them. Paul’s unique melody strumming creates the sound of multiple guitars from one instrument. His percussive techniques are always an exciting element thrown in to the mix. A hallmark of Paul’s music is the way his instrumental songs get stuck in your head. “I write them almost like a pop song. They need a hook, and they need drama too. A balance of theme, change and return. I want to make songs for everybody, not just guitar players.” Paul’s background in education is huge: A former faculty member and graduate of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, he studied privately and took master classes with Michael Hedges, Ben Verdery, Fareed Haque, John Stropes and a host of others. Paul has been teaching guitar for over 23 years. He’s taught clinics in Europe: Christ College (ENG), Beaufort Community School (ENG), St Mary’s Wotton Under Edge (ENG), Worship FCJG Conference (GER) and the U.S. in the Diocese Of Austin, TX. Wizard Academy, Austin, TX. Belmont University, Nashville, TN. Legacy Camp, Albuquerque, NM. White House Of Music, Waukesha, WI. Crosstown Coffee, Alameda, CA. Church Of The Ascension, Pittsburgh, PA. Chapel Rock Christian Church, Indianapolis, IN. Morrison Hill Christian Church, Kingston, TN. In Austin he teaches at The Austin Guitar School, One Day Academy and private lessons. Paul was also a proof reader for sheet music giant Hal Leonard Publishing, Inc. Spoken Groove repeatedly toured the U.S., England, Germany, Australia & Canada; regulars at festivals & conventions such as: Soul Survivor (England & Australia), Cornerstone, Ichthus, Youth Specialties, Emergent Conventions, A.C. Radio Seminar, Pitch & Praise (Canada), opening for or appearing with the likes of Jars Of Clay, Water Deep, Lost & Found, Mercy Me, Amy Grant, Shaun Groves, Mitch McVicker, and David Crowder. Other touring venues included universities, clubs, colleges, poetry slams, coffee houses, schools, churches, prison, youth camps, homes, even a classy Waffle House parking lot. Mas Optica was his Indie rock/Progressive Metal band from 1985 to 1996. Mas Optica released 1 full length CD worldwide in 1993 and numerous demo’s and compilations. Europe particularly gave much attention to Mas Optica in the underground Progressive Rock scene. He has performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, performed for years in Austin as a soloist, theater musician, children’s performances, an Austin Celtic and Cajun band (Glenn Glaz/Bayou Beaujolais). Paul also backs up artists such as Gina Chavez, Todd Garza, Anyah Dishon and Dave Thies live and in the studio. Sound track work includes the use of his music in documentaries, websites, presentations and commercials. A few examples: Milwaukee Public Museum, U.W. Milwaukee, Arizona State Parks, Anasazi Foundation, Imagine Art, Sun Pop Studio productions, author Keith Miller and other regional commercials & television.
